The Bloomington Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration Commission is accepting nominations for its 2026 Legacy Award, which recognizes individuals and organizations in Monroe County who reflect Dr. King’s principles. Nominations are open until December 1 and can be submitted online, according to a recent announcement.
The award recognizes individuals and organizations that advocate for diversity and justice and is part of Bloomington’s annual tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Eligible nominees must have at least one year of service in the local community.
The city hosts a community-wide event to present the Legacy Award every January. The event is open to the public and is part of the commission’s programs honoring Dr. King. The commission also supports initiatives such as Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the 40 Days of Peace, and the King Birthday Celebration.
The Legacy Award has been presented to recipients including Beverly Calender-Anderson, Sarah McCue, and the Monroe County Racial Justice Task Force for their work in promoting equality and serving the community.
