An active-duty Marine based at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, identified as 24-year-old William Richard Roy, has been charged with the alleged kidnapping and sexual assault of a 12-year-old Indiana girl, federal authorities reported. The FBI announced yesterday that the girl was safely recovered and the Marine arrested upon their arrival in Durham, North Carolina. This case brings to the fore concerns regarding the safety of minors on online platforms where predators may lurk.

According to WISHTV, Roy met the girl on TikTok before travelling to Indiana. The FBI's Indianapolis Field Office, acting on information from the Hammond Police Department, initiated the investigation when the girl's grandmother reported her missing last Friday. Under the belief she was with Roy, authorities coordinated to locate them, learning that Roy had flown to Chicago before meeting the girl at a park in Hammond. They then took residency at a Chicago hotel overnight before continuing their travel on a Greyhound bus to North Carolina, WISHTV reported.

The Marine is facing several charges, detailed as enticement of a minor to travel for illicit sexual activity, transportation of a minor to engage in illicit sexual activity, and interstate travel with intent to engage in a sexual act with a minor, as per WBALTV. Efforts to get a comment from someone associated with Roy through public records were to no avail, and the U.S. Marine Corps had not issued any immediate response regarding the incident.

The collaborative operation that resulted in Roy's arrest and the girl's safety involved the FBI's offices in Indianapolis, Charlotte, and Chicago, and was supported by local police and U.S. Marshals. In flying to Chicago and eventually arriving in Durham with the intention of sexual acts, authorities allege Roy crossed state lines, further complicating his legal troubles. FBI agents were able to take Roy into custody as soon as the bus arrived in Durham last Sunday, "safely rescued the child," as reported by WTHR. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
