Indiana House Republicans are on the lookout for college students and recent grads to fill their internships for the 2026 legislative session. This news comes straight from the officials of Montgomery County, who have shared that these positions offer not only practical experience but a paycheck to go along with it. State Rep. Beau Baird (R-Greencastle) emphasized that this is more than just making coffee or shadowing professionals—it's about being actively involved in state government workings. "We're proud to welcome students into the House Republican Internship Program each legislative session," Baird remarked, as detailed by Indiana House Republicans.
The program promises a full-time commitment, with interns working from Monday to Friday during the session period. Anticipating a hands-on experience, interns can expect to partake in legislative meetings and benefit from close interactions with the Statehouse's legislators and staff, stated by State Rep. Matt Commons (R-Williamsport). Eager students with an interest in government, politics, and public communication have been encouraged by Commons to throw their hats into the ring. "I encourage any student who is interested in government, politics and communications to apply today," Commons declared.
There's a variety of intern gigs on the table, including roles in legislative operations, policy, and communications. Interns will be partnered with a member of the staff, providing the chance to collaborate with state representatives. Moreover, State Rep. Mark Genda (R-Frankfort) noted the uniqueness of the experience at the Indiana Statehouse. Interns will get a front-row seat to the inner workings of committee meetings and contribute to the assistance of constituents and the dissemination of session updates. "The experience students earn through an internship at the Statehouse is unlike any other," Genda said.
Underlining the value of professional experience in today's cut-throat job market, State Rep. Jeff Thompson (R-Lizton) pointed out the internship as a notable line on any resume. Students looking to stand out in the employment arena post-graduation will find this program invaluable, according to Thompson, who said, "Having professional experience through opportunities like internships is crucial for students when seeking employment after graduating."
