The call is out for college students and recent grads looking for a deep dive into the workings of state government. Indiana House Republicans are on the hunt for interns to take part in the legislative process during the 2026 session, lawmakers from Hancock County announced.
Full-time paid internships await those interested in legislative operations, policy, and communications. Describing the internship experience, Ethan Lawson (R-Greenfield) tells us, "Students quickly see how decisions made here affect our communities. Interns also play an important role by making sure information moves smoothly between our neighbors across the district, and legislators." The internships will put participants smack dab in the heart of the Statehouse churn during the legislative session which runs from January to March, as per the Indiana House Republicans' release.
Students will find themselves tasked with not just clerical work—State Rep. Cory Criswell (R-Middletown) highlights the confidence boost many take away from the program. They'll be engaged in meaningful contributions throughout the week, Monday to Friday, alongside a staff member and state representatives. "They walk away knowing they can handle challenges and contribute in meaningful ways," Criswell stated, underlining the program's impact on interns' professional growth.
Engagement with Indiana's movers and shakers is a major perk of the internship. Opportunities to rub elbows with state legislators, state agencies, and private sector orgs are on the docket, complete with a speaker series featuring local civic leaders. State Rep. Chris Jeter (R-Fishers) isn't shy about the value added by interns, "Every year, interns become trusted members of our team, working alongside staff and legislators on important projects. It’s an excellent opportunity to understand how policy decisions are made, and how ideas turn into law," he cited the importance of the intern's role within the lawmaking ecosystem.
If you're eying this chance to wade into the legislative stream, mark your calendar - the deadline for applications is October 31. Hopefuls can find the form and further details on the Indiana House Republicans internship page.
