Indiana leaders, including State Representative Beau Baird, gathered at the Statehouse to call for stronger immigration policies. The event, titled Fairness for Hoosiers: The Need for State Action on Immigration, featured Baird alongside Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita, Governor Mike Braun, and former national security officials Tom Homan and Chad Wolf.
According to Indiana House Republicans, Baird emphasized the importance of cooperation among state, local, and federal agencies to enhance public safety and enforcement consistency. The discussion also addressed concerns about federal immigration loopholes and the need for state-level action.
Baird supported House Enrolled Act 1393 earlier this year, which aims to improve coordination between local and federal immigration agencies. Another proposal, House Bill 1531, which would have required local enforcement of federal immigration detainer requests, did not advance. Baird noted that the issue remains a legislative priority for future sessions.
