Earlier this week, State Rep. Stephen Bartels joined with state leaders, including Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita and Governor Mike Braun, as well as national security experts Tom Homan and Chad Wolf, to discuss the pressing need for stronger state action on immigration. The event, dubbed Fairness for Hoosiers: The Need for State Action on Immigration, was held at the Statehouse in Indianapolis and highlighted the call for enhanced cooperation between state, local, and federal agencies. Bartels emphasized the role of state officials in bolstering federal immigration efforts to ensure safer communities across Indiana.
According to a press release from the Indiana House Republicans, Bartels has actively supported measures aimed at improving coordination and cooperation with federal immigration agencies. Earlier in the year, he backed House Enrolled Act 1393, seeking an efficient local and federal law enforcement partnership. Despite the setback of House Bill 1531, which would require that local agencies honor immigration detainer requests, Bartels stated that the issue remains "a top priority moving forward."
As reported by Indiana House Republicans, during the briefing, leaders responded to questions from attendees, focusing on the weaknesses in current federal immigration enforcement and advocating for reform. "When it comes to immigration policy, there is a role for state officials to provide support for federal actions," Bartels told the attendees, underscoring the significance of such collaborations for the security of Indiana's borders and the protection of its citizens.
While recent legislative efforts, such as House Bill 1531, did not progress during the 2025 session, Bartels reinforced his commitment to the cause. According to the Indiana House Republicans, He acknowledged that the proposed legislation is crucial for Indiana's broader strategy to tighten border security, aiming to shield local communities from individuals perceived as threats to public safety. "We are exploring ways to work more closely with the federal government in an effort to secure our borders and create safer communities in Indiana," Bartels added, as he advanced the dialogues that embolden state intervention and stewardship on immigration matters.
