State Rep. J.D. Prescott (R-Union City) has launched a call for interns, opening up a path for college students, recent graduates, and postgraduate scholars to immerse themselves in the machinations of Indiana's state government during the 2026 legislative session. This opportunity, detailed by Indiana House Republicans, is not only a paid gig but a full-time commitment, requiring the presence of aspiring interns from Monday to Friday throughout the legislature's tenure from January to March.
The scope of the internship is particularly expansive, offering students the chance to directly witness, and even to some extent influence, policy-making in real-time. "With every internship class I've had the pleasure of working with, their skills grew and they made important connections during their time at the Statehouse," Prescott said, emphasizing the lasting impact these experiences have on the interns. This statement was obtained from the news release issued by the Indiana House Republicans.
Those selected for the program will be stationed at the Statehouse in downtown Indianapolis, gaining exposure to the nuts and bolts of legislative operations, policy, and communications. The interns are not mere observers; they are to be teamed up with staff members and assigned to different state representatives, thereby facilitating a hands-on approach to grasping the intricacies of legislature.
Prospective interns are encouraged to anticipate a dynamic learning environment, one that includes frequent interactions with state legislators, agencies, and private sector entities. Prescott emphasizes the intern's participatory role, asserting they will "have opportunities to interact" with these bodies, promising an even broader comprehension of the political ecosystem.
