The road to becoming an educator in Indiana is looking a tad less financially daunting for high school and college students with aspirations of teaching. According to the State of Indiana House of Representatives, Rep. Dave Hall (R-Norman), the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship is now accepting applications for the upcoming academic year. Hall highlighted the scholarship's importance, stating, "We need great teachers in every corner of the state."
This educational boon, originally set up in 2016 by the Indiana General Assembly, offers $10,000 annually for up to four years to students in exchange for committing to teach in Indiana for a minimum of five years. An increased award from $7,500, and now without the previous cap of 200 recipients, the scholarship shows Indiana's investment in nurturing future educators. "This scholarship gives aspiring educators the support they need to step into that role and make a meaningful impact," Hall said in a statement from the scholarship's State of Indiana House of Representatives announcement.
Prospective scholars must have either graduated or be on track to graduate from an accredited Indiana high school or a non-accredited nonpublic high school. In terms of academic requirements, applicants should rank in the top 20% of their graduating class, boast a top 20% ACT or SAT score, or maintain at least a 3.0 GPA. These stipulations are part of the scholarship's bid to attract high-performing students into the teaching profession.
The application for the 2026-2027 academic year is up for grabs until January 31, with scholarship statuses to be disclosed by April 2026. Students can apply through the Indiana Commission for Higher Education’s website and are encouraged to reach out to [email protected] with inquiries. Last year's response was record-breaking, with over a thousand applicants, nearly 300 awardees, illustrating the scholarship's growing appeal.
