Indianapolis has reached a settlement with AES Indiana that will limit electric rate increases for the coming years, according to the city’s Department of Public Works. FOX59 reports that under the agreement, AES Indiana will implement roughly half of the rate increase it originally proposed for street lighting and will be prohibited from requesting a base rate increase until 2030.

WISH-TV noted that residential fixed monthly charges will remain at Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC)-approved levels, providing financial stability for customers. The city’s intervention is expected to save taxpayers from higher costs associated with rate adjustments.

The dispute began in June when AES Indiana proposed a rate hike to address rising expenses. However, city officials opposed the increase, leading to a compromise that prevents about $47 million in debts and fees tied to billing system issues from being passed on to residents, as reported by WTHR.

The agreement limits the average monthly bill increase to about $10 by 2027 and includes reductions in vegetation management, labor costs, and AES’s return on equity. The settlement now awaits final approval from the IURC.
