The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) responded today to a vehicle that had crashed into the front of Spring Mill Elementary School. According to FOX59, the incident occurred around 2:13 a.m. at 8250 Spring Mill Road. Despite the crash, classes at the school continued as scheduled.
A sedan reportedly failed to stop at a stop sign while traveling westbound on 82nd Street. The vehicle passed a tree and two pillars before colliding with a school building. The adult female driver was not injured. Police reported that she showed signs of intoxication and was taken to Eskenazi Hospital for evaluation. WTHR later confirmed she was arrested on a preliminary charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI).
Ellen Rogers, communications manager for MSD of Washington Township, said in a statement obtained by WISHTV, "We will continue with a regular school day today, with some adjustments to visitor logistics to ensure safety and smooth operations." Rogers also noted the importance of following staff directions during drop-offs, "When arriving this morning, please follow the directions of our staff, who will assist with traffic flow and safe entry into the building."
As repairs began on the damaged entrance, the school implemented alternative access arrangements. The front entrance remained closed, and the administration took steps to minimize disruption. No additional information regarding the driver or any potential legal proceedings has been released.
