A man was critically injured after being shot several times in Miami's Liberty City today, in an incident that sparked an intensive police search and prompted a local school to go into lockdown, according to officials. Miami police reported to NBC Miami that they were investigating the shooting at the intersection of Northwest 15th Avenue and 61st Street.
The victim was found with several gunshot wounds and quickly transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, Miami Fire Rescue confirmed. While the individual's identity has not been released, Miami police characterized the casualty as a male, but withheld details of his age, according to Local 10. The school in proximity, Charles R Drew K-8 Center, was placed on a "secure lockdown" which was, later lifted midday.
Authorities are looking into the motive behind the shooting, which seems to have originated from an altercation between two individuals. As part of the initial response, a perimeter was established in the neighborhood as officers actively sought a potential suspect. Not long after, police detained one individual for further investigation.
As the scene was cordoned off for evidence collection and investigation, video footage from the area depicted a distressing scenario, with what appeared to be a considerable amount of blood on the street. "A possible subject had been 'detained for further investigation'," Miami police disclosed, pointing to a turn in their ongoing inquiry into the daytime shooting. Schools have since reopened, as reported by NBC Miami.
