In a concerted effort to ramp up road safety and provide meticulous responses to severe traffic incidents, Monroe County has initiated a new squad tasked with dissecting the anatomy of major vehicle mishaps. Sheriff Ruben Marté has unveiled, via a social media announcement, the creation of the Major Crash Investigation Team (MCI), designated to tackle the intricate web of fatal and life-altering traffic crashes across the jurisdiction.
The MCI Team's mission encapsulates providing comprehensive probes into traffic accidents, especially those resulting in fatalities or complex cases. Indiana's Criminal Justice Institute has funneled grant money into the sheriff's coffers, enabling the purchase of sophisticated equipment aimed at enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of data collection and analysis in the aftermath of road tragedies. “When tragedies occur on our roadways, the public deserves a thorough, professional investigation,” Sheriff Marté said on the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, ensuring the MCI Team's foundation aligns with overarching goals of safety, and transparency in law enforcement efforts.
Monroe County's new MCI Team features an assemblage of deputies, each equipped with distinct skill sets aimed at dissecting roadway incidents down to the finest detail. According to the sheriff's office, team members have been trained extensively in the science of crash reconstruction, evidence gathering tactics, and a multitude of analysis techniques. This team will also utilize expertise in impaired driving enforcement to bolster their mission. Spearheading this elite unit is Sergeant Kyle Moulden, who will act as the Team Commander, along with other selected deputies such as Sergeant Bennett Dillon and Detective Dillen Friend, both acknowledged as crash reconstruction specialists, and Corporal Gunnar Ortlieb, hailed for his proficiency as a Drug Recognition Expert.
