
A tragic incident occurred on a Norwegian Cruise Line journey when a passenger reportedly fell overboard on Monday, as the ship was making its way from Ponta Delgada, Portugal to Miami. The cruise line confirmed the incident, stating that the authorities were promptly alerted, leading to an extensive search and rescue operation that involved multiple vessels.
Despite the concerted efforts to find the missing person, the search was called off after turning up unsuccessful, and the ship, Norwegian Jewel, was allowed to proceed with its voyage. "“We are deeply saddened to confirm that on Monday, Oct. 20, 2025, we were notified that a guest was reported to have gone overboard while the ship was sailing from Ponta Delgada, Portugal to Miami,” a Norwegian Cruise Line spokesperson said, in a statement obtained by Local10. The identity of the passenger has not been disclosed at this time.
According to the same statement referenced by Local10, the cruise line's team is offering support to the passenger's family, saying, “The appropriate authorities were immediately notified, and an extensive search and rescue operation with multiple vessels was conducted. The search was unfortunately unsuccessful, and the ship was released by authorities to continue its voyage. Our team is attending to the guest’s loved ones during this very difficult time, and our thoughts and prayers are with them,” The Norwegian Jewel is expected to arrive in Miami on the coming Monday.
As details about the passenger remain sparse, the Norwegian spokesperson also mentioned the ongoing support being provided to those affected by the incident, according to NBC Miami, "Our team is attending to the guest's loved ones during this very difficult time, and our thoughts and prayers are with them."
