Utahns have a reason to smile as the state's Unclaimed Property Division announced it returned a record $43.4 million in fiscal year 2025 to its rightful owners, according to the Utah State Treasurer's Office. The division, tasked with the job of reuniting lost funds with their owners, handled 29,254 claims during the period from July 2024 to June 2025.
In the painstaking process to maintain order in this bureaucratic labyrinth, the division took in over 812,000 new unclaimed properties amounting to $178.3 million. These come from various sources, such as forgotten bank accounts and uncashed checks. "The amount of unclaimed money reported to the state continues to grow as businesses improve compliance through better technology, streamlined reporting processes, and increased education," Treasurer Marlo M. Oaks said, as per the Utah State Treasurer's Office, highlighting the importance of advancements and awareness in dealing with the accumulation of unclaimed funds.
However, with reward often comes challenge, and the division faces such challenges in staffing shortages and burgeoning claim demands. To effectively manage this issue, a number of improvements are being implemented. According to the statement from Treasurer Oaks, these enhancements include hiring additional claims processors and introducing automation for more efficient identity verification.
