In a show of respect for those who've donned the uniform, Canyons District is bringing Veterans Day into schools with a blend of old traditions and new tributes. Veterans and active service members, whether they're part of the school community as parents or locals, are walking through school doors to engage with students and share their stories. The District is adding a new layer this year with the installation of a Veterans Dedication Wall, an initiative that puts faces to the bravery and service of CSD employee veterans.
During assemblies and patriotic sing-alongs, schools will turn into galleries that put the spotlight on local service members. Yet, Canyons isn't stopping there. They've partnered with Sandy City to give students a shot at reflection and recognition with the "High Cost of Freedom Writing Contest." And yes, the contest includes various grade levels, from the youngest learners in K-1 to those on the brink of adulthood in grades 9-12, according to Canyons District.
Dr. Rick Robins, Superintendent of Canyons District, sees this as more than a swipe at civic duty. "Our students benefit from the freedoms that generations of veterans have fought to defend," he pointed out, as per Canyons District, signaling the importance of understanding the price paid for the liberties they enjoy. The new wall at the District Office will stand as a constant reminder.
