The Carmel Fire Department has expanded its team with the addition of Firefighter–Paramedic Kate Heishman, who brings nine years of experience in fire service. Her career has included roles with the Wayne Township Fire Department, Indianapolis International Airport Fire Department, and the Ellettsville Fire Department. A Facebook post on the Carmel Fire Department’s Facebook page notes that her background spans urban, rural, and specialized fire operations, providing a broad range of experience to support the Carmel community.

Heishman holds technician-level certifications in hazmat, rope rescue, confined space rescue, swift water and top water rescue, as well as aircraft firefighting. She is also trained in canine search and rescue and owns two working K9s, in addition to a mini Australian Shepherd and three horses. She chose to join the Carmel Fire Department because of the department’s culture and its commitment to continuous improvement.

Heishman’s ability to remain composed under pressure is particularly relevant in emergency services. She described the most rewarding aspect of her work as providing comfort to patients and their families when it is most needed. According to a Facebook post on the department’s Facebook page, she views each call as an opportunity to further develop her skills and expertise.

Heishman hopes to continue advancing within the department, with aspirations of one day becoming an officer. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to join the Carmel Fire Department and enthusiasm for the future. Outside of work, her interests include traveling, working with dogs, hiking, snowboarding, and paddleboarding. She is also known to enjoy firehouse meals such as bang-bang chicken or stir fry and has a fondness for sushi.
