The skies over Salt Lake City International Airport are seeing less traffic this weekend, with travelers facing the brunt of a government shutdown that has compelled the Federal Aviation Administration to mandate a nationwide reduction in flights. According to KUTV, the FAA's decision to decrease flight operations by four percent as of Friday, November 7th, will escalate incrementally to ten percent by November 14th, as part of measures to alleviate the strain on the air traffic system caused by the shutdown.
Salt Lake's cancellations have already begun to mount up, impacting the travel plans of countless individuals. Nancy Volmer, a spokesperson for the Salt Lake airport, indicated that a combination of 23 flights, both departures and arrivals, had been canceled over the weekend. As obtained by ABC4, Volmer highlighted the rarity of these cancellations under normal circumstances and attributed the current wave of disruption to the FAA's reduction in capacity.
Local passengers are experiencing firsthand the inconvenience posed by the flight cutbacks. KJZZ reported that travelers at Salt Lake International Airport are met with snaking lines at TSA checkpoints, despite which, many have maintained their calm. Some arrived at the airport only to discover their flights had been canceled, requiring them to adjust their plans on the fly. "I got here, I was checking in, and they said, ‘Well, that flight’s been canceled till 10:47 p.m. tonight,'" Mike Roth, a traveler bound for Boise, told KJZZ.
