The forthcoming 2026 World Cup at Gillette Stadium is driving a significant upgrade to the Foxboro MBTA station, aimed at bolstering its capacity and accessibility. According to NBC10 Boston, the $35 million construction project will prepare the station to usher more than 20,000 soccer fans to and from the global event. Sam Zhou, Assistant General Manager of the MBTA, expressed the scale of the operation, explaining, "This is probably the biggest transportation planning event in recent history in the Massachusetts area."
In preparation for the substantial influx of travelers, Foxboro Station's upgrades include the construction of a new 800-foot long covered platform and a 600-foot temporary platform. Notably, both platforms will be elevated to ensure full accessibility. As per details from MBTA's project announcement, these renovations are not just temporary fixtures for the World Cup, but long-term investments for the station, permitting additional special event trains for future events at the stadium.
Demonstrating optimism regarding the project's impact on event day logistics, Zhou told NBC10 Boston, "In order to serve up to 20,000 that means 10 trains have to come here, every game." The station is expected to face its preliminary test on December 1 during a Patriots game against the Giants, with the temporary platform being unveiled to support the crowd. This undertaking is evidently a prelude to the larger challenge of smoothly funneling soccer enthusiasts into Foxboro next summer.
The station renovation promises rider benefits beyond the World Cup hysteria, with regular commuters set to enjoy increased capacity and easier boarding thanks to the new accessible platforms. The temporary platform on the neighborhood side may, furthermore, be redeployed for future large events, further extending its utility beyond the immediate goal. During the work phase, Foxboro residents can expect equipment deliveries to the site via the service road south of Ashcroft Ln, predominantly between 7 AM and 4 PM on weekdays, as noted by the MBTA's website.
