The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) has appointed a new commander for the Downtown District, as announced on its official social media account. Commander Shane Foley, who has 18 years of service with the department, will assume the position, according to an IMPD News Facebook post.

Commander Foley, formerly the day shift captain in IMPD’s North District, has held several roles in the department. He has worked as Chief Bailey’s Executive Officer, supervised the Public Affairs Office, served as a sergeant in recruit training, and worked as a patrol officer in the East District. He has also been part of the East District crime reduction team and worked as a strategic intelligence officer.

Foley has served in several teaching and training roles within the department, including senior instructor, Fair and Impartial Policing instructor, and practitioner of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design. He has also served on the Event Response Group and mentored new officers. His awards include the Medal of Merit, East District Officer of the Year, and a Unit Citation. He holds a Master of Public Affairs with a focus on Criminal Justice from IUPUI, two Bachelor of Arts degrees in Criminal Justice and Political Science from the University of Texas at San Antonio, and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, where he also earned an advanced certificate through the University of Virginia.
