Indiana's aspiring educators may find their financial burdens lightened, as Monroe County legislators announce the availability of the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship. State Rep. Dave Hall (R-Norman) highlighted the importance of the scholarship, which offers $10,000 per year, for up to four years to students who commit to a five-year teaching stint in Indiana. "We need great teachers in every corner of the state," Hall emphasized, acknowledging the role these scholarships play in supporting future educators.
Breaking down the qualifications, State Rep. Bob Heaton (R-Terre Haute) mentioned, the scholarship targets high school and college students with top academic achievements. Eligible applicants should be graduates or on the cusp of graduation from an Indiana accredited high school or non-accredited nonpublic high school, and must rank in the top 20% of their class, have equivalent ACT or SAT scores, or maintain at least a 3.0 GPA. Heaton was quoted in a statement as saying, "This scholarship provides the financial support needed for students to confidently step into the classroom."
The application period for the 2026-2027 academic year is now open, with a submission deadline of January 31, according to State Rep. Peggy Mayfield (R-Martinsville). Applicants can find the necessary forms online and must submit them through the provided platform. Detailed information and assistance can be acquired by contacting the Indiana Commission for Higher Education at [email protected], as Mayfield articulated the state's commitment by saying, "Many young people feel called to serve their communities as teachers. By supporting students who choose this path, we're investing in Indiana's future and helping shape the next generation of Hoosiers."
The scholarship program has seen a significant expansion in recent years. In 2023, the legislature endorsed a law raising the award from $7,500 to $10,000 and eliminating the previous cap of 200 recipients per year. Last year's application cycle set a record with over a thousand applicants, with close to 300 scholarships ultimately being awarded.
