House Speaker Todd Huston has confirmed that the General Assembly is slated to handle urgent issues over a compact span in December, aiming to incorporate the work into the upcoming regular session as opposed to calling a costly special session.
According to a statement from Speaker Huston, internal discussions with House Republican caucus members and Senate colleagues resulted in an agreement to address time-sensitive issues from December 1 to December 12. A special session requested by the Governor sparked the initiative to start the regular 2026 session on an earlier note, with Organization Day on November 18 being the official commencement.
Speaker Huston stressed the importance of cost-efficiency in legislative processes, emphasizing the decision to "avoid any added session-related costs". He also stated that the leadership will continue to seek ways to save taxpayer dollars as they refine the session's timetable. A full calendar is anticipated to be available by Organization Day, as the Assembly prepares to embrace a schedule that reflects both the traditional and the evolving needs of governance.
