Despite an aggressive stance, Indy trailed in the early stages of the game - outnumbering the Rush in shots 14-9 in the initial period but still found themselves on the back foot, 3-1 according to WTHR. The Rush's scoring charge was led by Matt Hubbarde, Chaz Smedsrud, and Ryan Chyzowski, while Owen Robinson provided the solitary response for the Fuel during a frantic first session of play.
However, mid-game adjustments and relentless pressure turned the tides in favor of the home team. Sahil Panwar injected life into the Fuel's offense with a goal deep in the second period, and Kevin Lombardi kept his point streak alive, striking again two minutes later to edge closer to Rapid City's lead. Panwar wasn't finished, as he delivered yet another goal on the power play early in the third to level the score, setting the stage for an intense finish to regulation.
The turning point of the match came in the form of a goaltender switch when Owen Flores took over for Mitchell Weeks, an unexpected second-period substitution, after Weeks was sidelined by the Rush's early onslaught, Flores' resilience in the net during the second half proved pivotal as he stopped all attempts by the Rush to maintain their lead; the game would eventually burst into an overtime showdown where Lee Lapid found the back of the net to secure a magnanim triumph doled out by the hosts, with the Fuel taking a chance that came only 1:02 into the extra frame.
