In a series of recent posts on Truth Social, former President Donald Trump has expressed his discontent with certain Indiana state lawmakers over their reluctance to support redistricting efforts. Trump singled out Indiana Senate Majority Leader Rodric Bray and State Sen. Greg Goode, accusing them of preventing the GOP from potentially gaining seats in the U.S. Congress. According to an article by NBC News, Trump dedicated a post to this cause, declaring his disappointment and calling for the need to replace those who do not back redistricting.
Trump's pointed comments come on the heels of several states, including Texas and California, engaging in a contentious mid-decade redistricting struggle. This political tug-of-war could influence the nature of districts ahead of the midterm elections. In the thick of this baton pass between states, Bray has gone on record saying that the Indiana Senate lacks the necessary support to proceed with redistricting, as reported by WTHR. Despite this, Trump asserts that legislators opposed to redistricting should expect primary challenges and emphasized urgency by stating, "let's get them out of office, ASAP," as per NBC News.
The discord within the Indiana GOP escalated when State Sen. Greg Goode was the target of a "swatting" incident, following Trump's criticism. Goode issued a statement, "While this entire incident is unfortunate and reflective of the volatile nature of our current political environment, I give thanks to God that my family and I are ok," as obtained by WTHR. Senate Minority Leader Shelli Yoder labeled the swatting incident "terrible" and "sad," relieved that Goode and his family were not harmed.
Amid these tensions, Gov. Mike Braun has publicized his allegiance to Trump's redistricting push. Braun, facing criticism from Trump for lack of action, supposedly had a "great call with President Trump! I told him I remain committed to standing with him on the critical issue of passing fair maps in Indiana to ensure the MAGA agenda is successful in Congress,” according to a social media post reported by Indiana Capital Chronicle. His statement came as Republican legislative leaders avoided discussion on redistricting, even as Trump continued his reproach, asserting his intent to "strongly endorsing against" any Indiana lawmaker who does not vote in favor of redistricting.
