Two students from Highland High School were arrested on Monday after an anonymous tip led authorities to a weapon at Sugar House Park, as confirmed by school Principal Jeremy Chatterton. As obtained by KUTV, Chatterton revealed, "The incident involved students and a weapon. ... Police arrested two students and confiscated the weapon." The school was promptly placed in Secure Alert status, which lasted around 20 minutes, halting all ingress and egress while maintaining normal activities within.
According to Yandary Chatwin of the Salt Lake County School District, as reported by KSLTV, the precautionary lockdown was directly tied to the police activity in the adjacent park. Although the incident with the weapon initially took place off the school grounds, Sgt. Greg Wilking with the SLCPD disclosed that the two juveniles were later to be found on the property of Highland High.
The two minors arrested were found with not just a gun, but also ammunition, and they possessed tobacco and marijuana products, according to police statements referenced by FOX 13. The investigators working on the case expressed uncertainty regarding whether the weapon found was used in the altercation at Sugar House Park, but they have reasons to believe it wasn't involved.
