On the night before Christmas, an officer-involved shooting in Brentwood has left one man dead following a routine traffic stop suspected for DUI. The Brentwood Police Department took to social media to announce the incident, which unfolded on Balfour Road and Foothill Drive at around 10:55 p.m. yesterday. The officers on the scene found themselves in a precarious situation when a loaded high-powered rifle was discovered in the vehicle of a man in his 40s, who the police say was the sole occupant.
The situation escalated rapidly as the driver allegedly began to resist arrest physically and refused to comply with verbal commands. It was during this confrontation that the man reached for the rifle, compelling one officer to discharge their weapon. Despite several officers providing emergency medical aid, the driver succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The details of the incident, shared by the City of Brentwood Police Department, state that no officers were seriously injured.
As standard protocol requires, the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office is conducting a parallel investigation. The public can expect the release of body-worn and in-car camera footage as permitted by law. For now, the identity of the deceased has been withheld, pending the notification of next of kin. The Brentwood Police Department is keeping tight-lipped, revealing no additional information while the investigation continues.
Any individuals with knowledge pertinent to the case are being urged to come forward. They are encouraged to directly contact the Brentwood Police Department at (925) 809-7911, with assurances that callers may choose to remain anonymous.
