A high-speed chase early in the morning in Fort Wayne ended in tragedy when the fleeing vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian. The Fort Wayne Police Department reported that the incident began near Lawton Pl. and Griswold Dr., when an officer attempted to pull over a vehicle, which then sped off, eluding capture and causing chaos in its wake. The pursuit continued for several minutes, with the vehicle making a series of risky maneuvers in an attempt to escape the police.
According to official reports, the suspect's vehicle eventually collided with an unsuspecting pedestrian while making a turn onto Spy Run Ave. The hit-and-run driver did not stop, instead continuing to desperately try to evade the authorities. Shortly after, the driver sideswiped another car. The ill-fated chase concluded when the driver, later identified as 30-year-old Denzel Trevon Gordon, came to an abrupt halt in the 1400 block of Spy Run Ave and attempted to flee on foot.
Witnesses assisted the police by calling 911, which resulted in Gordon's capture as he was found hiding behind a residence. A handgun that Gordon discarded during the chase was recovered at the scene. Tragically, the male pedestrian who was hit was pronounced dead at the location of the impact, while the driver of the second vehicle was unharmed. Local authorities have kept Spy Run Ave between E. Superior St. and E. Fourth St. sealed off during the investigation.
