The Fishers Police Department reported that a drone equipped with thermal imaging helped officers locate and apprehend a suspect. According to a department social media post, the individual had temporarily evaded both family members and police, but the drone operator was able to quickly identify their location.
The drone also helped officers locate a discarded handgun in nearby bushes. According to the Fishers Police Department, officers were guided to the weapon and retrieved it safely. In a. Facebook post, Chief Ed Gebhart noted, “Using thermal imaging from one of our drones we were able to quickly locate the individual.”
The individual was taken into custody without incident. The case shows how drone technology and trained operators can assist in maintaining officer and public safety.
