The National Weather Service (NWS) in Indianapolis has issued a series of severe weather alerts impacting central Indiana, warning residents to brace for a combination of heavy snow, below-freezing temperatures, and dangerous wind chills through the weekend, as per NWS.
Today, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect, with NWS predicting snow accumulations of 4 to 6 inches and the possibility of higher localized amounts. The advisory warns of "slippery road conditions" and the need for extra caution, recommending that travelers "keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency."
Added to the onslaught of snow is a Cold Weather Advisory, effective from midnight tonight to 1 PM EST tomorrow. Hoosiers should expect "very cold wind chills as low as 23 below zero," which pose the risk of frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. The advisory includes a broad swath of Indiana, from Carroll to Jennings County, urging residents to wear appropriate clothing, hats, and gloves when outdoors.
Additionally, concerns are not limited to Saturday's weather events. The weather service's Hazardous Weather Outlook extends through the following week, with a "cold weather advisory has been issued for all of Central Indiana" signaling that tomorrow through Monday morning may bring wind chills between -15 and -20 F, and actual air temperatures plunging to -10 F or lower.
The NWS also seeks citizen support, stating in their hazardous weather outlook, "Snowfall reports would be appreciated today and tonight." These conditions signify more than a winter inconvenience and stand as a serious threat to public safety. The forecast for subsequent days suggests a period of sub-freezing cold before a slight midweek warming, which yet brings further risks—potential rainfall in temperatures hovering just above the freezing mark.
