An Indianapolis volleyball coach has been charged with a felony after a viral video surfaced showing a confrontation between him and a vigilante YouTuber. Levi Garrett, 34, faces charges of attempted dissemination of matter harmful to minors following an investigation sparked by the video, according to court documents. Garrett was accused of sending sexually explicit messages and images to someone he believed was a 14-year-old boy on Grindr, a dating app. The decoy, part of a private group conducting sting operations, was actually an adult posing as a minor. Garrett's interactions with the decoy, and his subsequent confrontation, were captured on video by YouTuber JiDion and have been viewed over 1.2 million times.
The sting and subsequent confrontation took place at The Academy Volleyball Club on East 30th Street, as shown in a video posted by JiDion back in August. Criticism arose online when Indianapolis Metropolitan Police officers at the scene did not arrest Garrett immediately, despite the purported evidence. However, as IndyStar reported, IMPD later clarified that a report was filed and detectives were notified of the allegations. Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears stated, "There are no shortcuts in the investigative process," emphasizing the need for a proper and independent investigation to hold offenders accountable. Garrett's case is scheduled for a change of plea hearing on January 27, 2026.
During the exchanges on Grindr, Garrett engaged in explicit conversations despite being told the decoy's age. In the court records, it was noted that Garrett had replied "No I don't mind" after being informed that the decoy was young, and continued the conversation even after the decoy confirmed being only 14, as WRTV detailed. The disturbing content of the conversation included Garrett's subsequent transmission of three sexually explicit images.
