According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, central Indiana can expect to see some light snow later this afternoon and evening, just in time for the New Year's Eve celebrations. An update posted on the forecast.weather.gov website outlines that there's a 20 percent chance of snow after 3pm today with cloudy conditions and a high near 34 degrees; by tonight, the snow chance increases to 50 percent, mainly before 1am.
The Special Weather Statement issued by the National Weather Service reports that light snow is expected to begin across the northeast half of central Indiana during the second half of the afternoon and persist through the evening, with light accumulations up to an inch possible along and northeast of Interstate 74, this may create slick conditions, especially on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses by evening.
For travelers and those ringing in the new year, it's important to note that untreated surfaces could become slippery as the temperature drops; the weather service advises allowing extra time to reach your destination. Looking ahead, New Year's Day is forecasted to be mostly sunny with a high near 29 degrees, providing some respite from the evening's snow.
As the holidays wind down and the first week of January approaches, the weather outlook for central Indiana remains largely unhazardous apart from tonight's snow. "No hazardous weather is expected at this time," says the Hazardous Weather Outlook for the region, which looks to promise calm conditions following tonight’s passing snow showers and a steady rise into more temperate highs nearing the mid-40s by next Monday.
