A West Town family is searching for answers after Christian Law, a Ross University veterinary student home in Chicago for the holidays, was found dead on a neighborhood sidewalk the morning after a night out with friends. Relatives say he had been back in the city for only about 24 hours before he was discovered and later pronounced at a hospital. Loved ones describe Law as a driven student who adored animals and had been eagerly awaiting his winter break.
According to relatives, Law spent the night of Dec. 13 first at Kashmir, then at a house party on Greenview Avenue. Around 7 a.m. the next morning, a woman walking her dog found him lying on the sidewalk. Police opened a death investigation and questioned at least one friend who had been with him that night. Family members said Law's phone, ID, and credit cards were initially missing but were later recovered. Investigators are asking anyone with Ring or doorbell footage or who saw anything suspicious in the area to come forward, as reported by NBC Chicago.
“It’s unreal that this has happened,” Illinois Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Lightford said, calling Law “a fine young man” and promising that the family would keep pushing for answers. Lightford, who is Law’s godmother, told reporters that his mother was too distraught to speak on camera and stressed that the family intends to keep seeking justice. Relatives said Law was well into his third semester at Ross University and dreamed of becoming a veterinarian, according to NBC Chicago.
Medical Examiner Review And Timeline
Officials have not yet released the cause of death. Laboratory testing and other analyses are still underway, and toxicology results can take weeks or even months. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office notes that cases are often listed as "pending" while those tests are completed. That waiting period leaves families and investigators in limbo while detectives continue to track leads, gather video, and speak with witnesses.
What Investigators Say And Next Steps
Chicago police are treating Law's death as a death investigation and say detectives will keep interviewing people who were with him and reviewing any available surveillance footage. As the family and community supporters press for clarity and make funeral arrangements, investigators are urging anyone with information to contact the police. No arrests or charges have been announced, and the investigation remains active.
