A tragic incident unfolded at an Irvington clothing store where a woman was fatally shot during what police believe was an attempted robbery gone awry. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to a call last evening around 6:45 p.m. at 5620 E. Washington Street, the location of a women's boutique named Josephine's. Upon the officers' arrival, they discovered the woman with gunshot wounds who was later pronounced dead on the scene by medics, as reported by WISH-TV.
The same evening, detectives also encountered a man believed to be related to the crime. The suspect reportedly fled the scene but was soon located hiding behind a tree. Despite efforts to calmly bring him into custody, the situation escalated when the man, armed with a handgun, fatally shot himself during a standoff with police. He was transported to a hospital in critical condition and later succumbed to his wounds. FOX59 described the dialogue with the man leading up to the event as "significant".
Authorities have reiterated that no IMPD officers discharged their weapons during the encounter. The investigation into the circumstances of the robbery and shooting is ongoing, and IMPD has expressed confidence that all parties involved in the incident have been accounted for.
