An 84-year-old Hialeah man, Antonio Hernandez, has been detained following a fatal hit-and-run collision that resulted in the death of a person using a wheelchair. The incident occurred around 10:45 a.m. this past Friday, as reported by Local 10 News.
The collision took place near the intersection of Palm Avenue and West 49th Street. Hernandez was behind the wheel of a gold Honda Pilot SUV when he struck the victim, who was crossing the street. Upon being hit, the wheelchair-bound victim was then dragged under the vehicle, according to Hialeah Police Department's arrest report.
Hernandez subsequently drove away from the scene without stopping, even as the victim, suffering from a severe head injury, was left on the road. Despite found by first responders as unresponsive but breathing, the victim later died at Hialeah Hospital, NBC Miami detailed.
Investigators located Hernandez the same day at his residence, where his vehicle was identified bearing disturbing evidence—blood was present on the front bumper and a pair of glasses, likely from the victim, was attached to the hood. After being taken into custody, Hernandez gave a statement to detectives, the contents of which remain undisclosed to the public. Hernandez is currently being held at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center without the option of bond.
