Davante Payne, 30, was arrested on Indy’s eastside in connection with an armed robbery, assault, and shots fired. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department linked him to the incident in a social media post.
The incident occurred on the evening of Friday. North District officers responded to a call from Community North Hospital about a robbery with injury on the 800 block of N Gray Street. The investigation revealed that a verbal argument over a takeout meal earlier in the day escalated into violence. The victim was struck with a mini baseball bat, shot at, and had their belongings taken.
Payne, who was under GPS monitoring for another case, was spotted riding a bicycle in the East District. Officers saw a handgun in his coat pocket. After initially complying, Payne resisted arrest, and officers used a taser to subdue and handcuff him.
A search warrant at the home linked to the robbery uncovered additional evidence. Payne faces preliminary charges including armed robbery, kidnapping, possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, and criminal recklessness. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will decide on formal charges, and Payne is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
