A Champaign, Illinois man was seriously injured in a single-vehicle crash in Cass County yesterday. The crash occurred just after noon and involved a 2007 Chevy Silverado that left the roadway and struck several trees, according to FOX59.

The driver was identified as 33-year-old Richard Montenegro of Logansport, Indiana. The rear driver-side passenger, 56-year-old Manuel Uria of Champaign, was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated by fire personnel, Pharos Tribune reported.

The crash happened around 12:21 p.m. east of County Road 325 East on Southeast River Road. Emergency responders from the Logansport Fire Department, New Waverly Fire Department, Walton Fire Department, and Cass County EMS responded to the scene. Uria was transported by ambulance to IU Arnett Hospital in Lafayette after weather conditions prevented the use of a medical helicopter.

According to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, a preliminary investigation by Deputy Joe Gentile determined that Montenegro drove off the north side of the roadway before striking multiple trees, Country Herald reported. Two other passengers in the vehicle were not injured.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the crash and is asking anyone with information to contact the department at 574-753-7800.
