A neighborhood landmark in north Austin briefly turned into an active emergency scene Monday, as fire crews tackled a blaze at the Quail Creek clock tower and shut down part of Rutland Drive while they secured the area. The Austin Fire Department responded, extinguished the fire and reported no injuries. Investigators were heading to the site to determine what sparked the flames.

What the fire department reported
According to FOX 7 Austin, the Austin Fire Department said crews put out the blaze and that fire investigators were on their way to examine the clock tower. FOX 7 Austin noted that officials asked drivers and residents to avoid the area while firefighters worked, and described the road closure as a safety measure while emergency personnel secured the scene.
Road closure and local context
Part of Rutland Drive was closed between Parkfield Drive and Grouse Meadow Lane while crews operated at the clock tower. Per the City of Austin, that stretch of road has seen recent construction tied to the Little Walnut Creek flood-risk reduction project, which has previously required lane and street closures in the area. Those ongoing works can complicate detours and traffic patterns for residents and drivers when incidents like this pop up.
Investigation and safety guidance
The Austin Fire Department told FOX 7 Austin that investigators will determine the cause after they complete their on-site review. Officials reiterated that there were no reported injuries and again urged the public to steer clear of the scene so emergency crews could work safely. This is a developing story, and authorities are expected to release more details as the investigation continues.
