The Chicago Police Department has issued a community alert following a string of armed robberies striking Chicago's Washington Park and West Woodlawn neighborhoods. Perpetrated by a group of males believed to be in their late teens to early twenties, these individuals, donning ski masks and black hooded sweatshirts, have escalated their crimes from simple theft to kidnapping and extortion.
Armed with handguns, the suspects sought more than just personal belongings, with one harrowing incident involving a victim being forced into a white sedan, where they were then coerced into providing access to their bank account. Displaying a blend of brazenness and calculation, the robberies occurred across a slew of locations and times, suggesting that the perpetrators have little fear of being caught, snatching away possessions as they besieged the community.
The reported incidents span from December 31, 2025, to the start of January 2026. The details of these disturbing events include multiple instances on South Michigan Avenue, South Rhodes, East 61st Street, West 59th Street, South Langley Avenue, South Cottage Grove Avenue, and South Blackstone Avenue. The offenders are described as African American males, roughly estimated to be 17-24 years old, and approximately 6'0" in height.
The Chicago Police Department advises the public to maintain a high level of awareness, report any suspicious activities, and, if confronted, attempt to memorize any distinctive features of the assailants. While under such dire duress, the community is being told, "If you are confronted by an assailant, remain calm," and it is advised not to chase after any fleeing suspect, but rather provide any useful information to the authorities. Officers urge citizens to call 9-1-1 immediately in the event of any such encounter.
While the Chicago Police Department ramps up efforts to quell this surge in violence and theft, the affected communities remain on high alert. Local forums and neighborhood watch groups have been quick to circulate the information, pressing upon the importance of solidarity and mutual aid in the face of such threats. These recent events have not only taken a toll on the victims but on the community's sense of security as well. The police are continuing to investigate and ask any individuals with information pertaining to these crimes to come forward.
