A 70-year-old man was killed Monday night after being struck by a hit-and-run driver in Fort Lauderdale. The incident occurred around 8 p.m. on West Sunrise Boulevard near Northwest 5th Avenue. Fort Lauderdale police are searching for information related to the suspect vehicle, according to Local 10.
The victim was identified by family members as 70-year-old Johnnie Davis and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. Family members told NBC Miami that Davis lived across the street and had spoken with relatives about an hour before the incident. His daughter, Jazzlynn Simmons, said she later found him injured in the roadway after her daughter noticed a body lying there, which was confirmed to be Davis. In a statement to NBC Miami, Simmons said she is seeking information from anyone who may have witnessed the incident.
The incident has had a significant impact on the Davis family, as Simmons had recently lost her mother on November 6, 2025. Authorities reported that traffic was affected during the investigation, with westbound lanes of West Sunrise Boulevard diverted northbound onto North Andrews Avenue, as per Caribbean National Weekly.
Fort Lauderdale police are asking anyone with information to contact Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. In an interview with NBC Miami, Simmons described how her daughter recognized the victim as her grandfather when they arrived at the scene. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue efforts to identify the driver involved in the hit-and-run.
