It was a solemn gathering at the Indiana Statehouse this past Monday, as State Rep. Julie Olthoff (R-Crown Point) joined forces with Lake County sheriff's officer Christopher Akey to pay tribute to a local hero. As detailed in a recent report by Indiana House Republicans, the House Chamber witnessed the passing of House Concurrent Resolution 2, which honors the late Lake County Sgt. William Paterson.
Olthoff proposed renaming a section of U.S. Highway 30 between mile markers 15 and 16 as the "Sergeant William Gilbert Paterson Memorial Mile." Paterson was killed in the line of duty on Jan. 25, 1994, during a high-speed chase.
The resolution now moves to the Senate for consideration. Rep. Olthoff said, His sacrifice and legacy are something we must never forget, emphasizing the importance of honoring Paterson’s service.
