With the entirety of central Indiana under a Winter Storm Warning, people are bracing for accumulated snow reaching up to 13 inches in some areas and hazardous travel conditions that could impact the Monday morning commute.
This harsh weather scenario is not just about snow; it brings with it a brutal wave of cold—that's according to the NWS, which has put into effect an Extreme Cold Warning indicating wind chill values plummeting as low as -25 degrees Fahrenheit.
Forecasters urge residents to prepare for the frosty days ahead; the cold snap is expected to last through the coming week, prompting the issuance of a Cold Weather Advisory for potentially dangerous wind chills tipping the scales at -20 degrees. Community members are advised to dress in layers, utilize face masks, and gloves, and to heed guidelines for the safe operation of portable heaters, to avoid the use of indoor generators or grills, and to check on those most vulnerable to the extreme temperatures.
Amid the blanket of snow, local authorities and the NWS encourage the use of the 511 service for current road conditions and call on those with travel plans to reconsider them, or if travel is unavoidable, to pack emergency kits with essential items including food, water, and a flashlight. "If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency," the NWS warned Indianapolis residents.
