Indianapolis is set to see a shuffle at the top of its leadership ranks. In an announcement on the city government's official Facebook page, Mayor Joe Hogsett declared that Chris Bailey, currently at the helm of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), will ascend to the role of Chief Deputy Mayor and Chief of Staff starting February 2. According to the post, the long-serving law enforcement officer carries over 26 years of policing experience into the mayor's office.
Bailey's record is notable for steering the IMPD through substantial declines in every crime category, along with initiating a transparency portal aimed at engaging with the community. These accomplishments seemingly position him as a fitting choice to oversee a city that hopes to maintain its trajectory towards improved public safety. In a statement obtained by the City of Indianapolis - Government, Mayor Hogsett stated, "Chris Bailey is a proven leader with a longstanding career defined by service, accountability, and meaningful results." Despite the small error in the statement's phrasing, the emphasis was clear: Hogsett has high expectations for Bailey's impact in the Mayor’s Office.
Forward momentum for Indianapolis hinges on strong leadership, particularly in public safety and the building of stronger communities, a priority echoed in the Mayor’s confidence in Bailey. "His appointment as Chief Deputy Mayor and Chief of Staff underscores our administration’s continued commitment to public safety and stronger neighborhoods," Mayor Hogsett conveyed. With that commitment comes the need for new leadership at IMPD; Hogsett has indicated that an announcement regarding the new leadership is forthcoming.
