The Indianapolis Zoo has a bouncing new addition to their family. According to FOX59, white-handed gibbons Koko and Elliot are the proud parents of a newborn baby, welcomed into the world on January 10, 2026. The zoo shared in a social media post that "the baby and mom are doing well."
As any good parent would, the Indianapolis Zoo has decided that the gibbon family will enjoy some privacy for now. "The gibbons are set to remain off exhibit until temperatures warm up," WTHR reported. Meanwhile, these endangered apes will have a snug and secure environment to bond without the gawking eyes of zoo-goers.
Growing the gibbon population is particularly significant, considering their endangered status. Native to Southeast Asia, white-handed gibbons are known for their agility and the strong familial bonds they form. According to WISH-TV, "This is Koko's fourth offspring at the Indianapolis Zoo, joining big brother Echo." These social creatures often stay with their parents for as long as seven years, highlighting the importance of this developmental period.
Zoo officials said the gibbon family will not be on public display until temperatures increase. According to the zoo, animal care staff are monitoring the animals closely during this period to ensure their health and well-being. Officials also noted that gibbons can live more than 40 years, providing future opportunities for visitors to see the zoo’s newest addition.
