The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) East Central has issued a warning to drivers about the risk of black ice as winter conditions continue. In a recent Facebook post, INDOT noted that "wintry nights can make black ice a hidden danger on the roads" and reminded motorists that icy patches "aren't always visible." Drivers are advised to exercise caution, reduce speeds, and maintain safe following distances when traveling in cold conditions.
INDOT East Central advised drivers to reduce speed and increase following distances, emphasizing smooth acceleration, braking, and steering. The agency highlighted bridges and overpasses as areas requiring extra caution, since they freeze more quickly. In the event of a slide, drivers are instructed to remain calm, ease off the accelerator, and steer in the direction the rear of the vehicle is sliding.
INDOT East Central also stressed the importance of maintaining visibility during wintry nights. Drivers are encouraged to keep headlights on and ensure windshields are clear, helping both their own vision and making vehicles more visible to others on the road.
INDOT also reminded motorists about the Hoosier Helpers program, sponsored by GEICO, which provides roadside assistance to travelers in need. The department noted on social media, "And don’t forget the INDOT Hoosier Helpers, sponsored by GEICO , are here to help!" The program is designed to support road safety by assisting drivers during emergencies and difficult conditions.
