Miami Gardens Police are searching for a suspect following a reported sexual assault at Florida Memorial University. Local 10 reported that the investigation is ongoing after the incident occurred on Sunday morning.
Authorities reported that the victim is a Colombian student on a visa. The Miami Gardens Police Department stated that she encountered an unknown male who directed unwanted attention toward her at a bus stop. In an attempt to seek safety, she returned to the university campus, where the suspect followed her and committed sexual battery by pressing her against a building door before fleeing.
The suspect is described as a Black male, approximately six feet tall, with a medium complexion, last seen wearing a black hoodie and black pants. Authorities are asking anyone with information to come forward.
Deion Hampton, a student at the university, told NBC Miami that the incident is distressing and emphasized the importance of preventive measures. University President William McCormick issued a statement reaffirming the institution’s commitment to safety and outlining the steps taken in response, including enhanced security protocols on and around campus.
Miami Gardens Police and the university are working together to locate the perpetrator and implement measures to reduce the likelihood of similar incidents in the future. Students and staff are being updated as developments occur, and the police have increased high-visibility patrols and allocated additional law enforcement resources to the campus.
