The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration Commission has announced Ruth Aydt as the honoree for the 2026 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Award. Dedicated to enriching community life in Monroe County since 2017, Aydt's efforts include pivotal research, organization of volunteers, and leadership within various social justice-oriented groups.
According to a report by the Monroe County National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), where Aydt has been involved since 2017, she amalgamated extensive criminal justice information to uncover racial disparities within the system of Monroe County. Beyond data consolidation, Aydt contributed by editing the NAACP's newsletter, facilitating executive committee communications, and enhancing the virtual presence for their general body meetings.
The commission chair, Dr. Gloria Howell, spoke highly of Aydt's work, "Ruth’s contributions have positively shaped this community. Her actions are just as bold and intentional as her words." In an interview with Bloomington.in.gov, Howell added, "As someone who has worked closely with Ruth, I can attest to the fact that she is genuine and authentic and demonstrates an ethic of care that is unmatched."
Aydt has been active with the Unitarian Universalist Church of Bloomington's Racial Justice Task Force since 2020. She worked with historian Elizabeth Mitchell to organize educational tours to historical Black sites, including West Baden First Baptist Church and Crispus Attucks High School, and served as the first chair of the NAACP Schools Sub-committee, helping implement a 2023 policy in Monroe County schools.
Aydt is also known for her participation as a volunteer at the Neal Marshall Black Culture Center (NMBCC) and Resilience Productions, where she managed a team of 75 volunteers for a significant cultural conference. The 2026 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Award will be presented to Ruth Aydt at a special event taking place at the Buskirk Chumley Theater on January 19, with further details available through the event's website.
