An armed suspect was taken into custody last night after what officials called a "dangerous situation" on the Indiana University Indianapolis campus, according to university police. Students and visitors were urged to steer clear of the area around the Engineering, Science and Technology building and the Gateway Garage while officers moved in. Authorities later said the scene was secure and that there was no ongoing threat to the campus community.
What Officials Said
Urgent alerts on the IU emergency site reported an armed person in the Gateway Garage and told people to avoid the area while law enforcement responded, according to Emergency IU. The Rave feed shows a series of updates as IU Police Department officers worked with local agencies during the response.
WTHR reports that Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers joined IUPD at the scene and that the suspect was taken into custody without further incident. According to WTHR, IUPD told reporters the person appeared to be unaffiliated with the university, and officials later confirmed there was no continuing threat to campus.
Where It Happened
Reports placed the incident near West Michigan Street and North Blackford Street, a busy stretch of the downtown campus lined with classrooms and labs. The university's parking pages list Gateway Garage as a student-and-visitor facility on North Blackford, and the IU Indianapolis bulletin places the Engineering, Science and Technology building on West Michigan. Together, those details put the response squarely in the central campus footprint. Campus officials routinely rely on IU Notify and the Rave feed to push out updates when something unfolds in this area.
What Comes Next
Investigators from IUPD and IMPD remained on scene to sort through the circumstances surrounding the reported incident, and no charges had been announced at the time of reporting, WTHR noted. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-TIPS (8477), and campus community members can find IUPD contact information on the university's public safety pages. Officials have not released the suspect's name or additional details while the investigation continues.
