Beech Grove is saying a hard goodbye today to Officer Brian Elliott, the 33-year-old hometown cop who was fatally shot while responding to a domestic disturbance last Monday. Friends, family and officers from across Indiana are gathering at Beech Grove High School to honor a son of the city colleagues describe simply as "one of our own."

How The Shooting Unfolded

Last Monday, officers were sent to the 100 block of Diplomat Court after a 911 call reported a domestic disturbance. As two officers announced themselves and moved toward an apartment doorway, gunfire came from inside. Officer Brian Elliott and another officer were hit and rushed to Eskenazi Hospital. Elliott later died and the second officer was reported in stable condition, according to WRTV.

Investigation And Charges

Indiana State Police identified 47-year-old Kenneth Johnson as the suspect. He was taken into custody by IMPD SWAT several hours after the shooting. Johnson faces multiple felony counts, including murder and attempted murder, and prosecutors requested life without parole at his initial hearing, according to WTHR.

Remembering Elliott

City officials say Elliott grew up in Beech Grove and was "living his dream" serving the community he knew better than most. He graduated from Beech Grove High School, earned a criminal justice degree from IUPUI, worked with the Marion County Sheriff's Office and was honored at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy. The city shared visitation and funeral information as residents came together to mourn, according to the City of Beech Grove.

Support And Funeral Details

Visitation was held Sunday, and a celebration of Elliott's life is set for 11 a.m. at Beech Grove High School, followed by a procession to Crown Hill Cemetery. The Central Indiana Police Foundation is handling the official, family-approved fund to support Elliott's widow and family, and the family's care was entrusted to Little & Sons Funeral Home, according to the Indiana Sheriffs' Association's Facebook post.
