Indianapolis detectives have arrested a 17-year-old in connection with a near-north side shooting that sent a man to the hospital late last summer.
The shooting happened just after midnight on Aug. 8, 2025, in the 3500 block of Ralston Avenue. The victim was taken to a hospital in stable condition. At first, investigators thought the gunshot might have been self-inflicted, but they later ruled that out as evidence came in.
According to WISH‑TV, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department detectives secured an arrest warrant and took the teen into custody on Thursday. The warrant includes counts of battery by means of a deadly weapon, criminal recklessness and dangerous possession of a firearm. Because the suspect is a minor, IMPD has not released a name or booking photo. The department said the arrest followed evidence gathered during the investigation, the station reports.
Neighborhood Context And Past Incidents
Neighbors around Ralston Avenue say the area between 30th and 38th streets has felt increasingly tense, and this latest arrest lands in the middle of a troubling pattern. The corridor has seen several shootings in recent years.
In April 2025, a double shooting nearby left one man dead and another wounded, highlighting persistent violence on the near-north side, according to reporting by WRTV. Community groups and police leaders have pointed to the need for both enforcement and prevention efforts if the neighborhood is going to break that cycle.
Charges And What Comes Next
The arrest warrant lists felony-level charges that, if formally filed, could open the door for prosecutors to seek adult treatment of the case, which would change how the 17-year-old is handled in court, according to the IMPD notification cited by WISH‑TV. State policy generally keeps juvenile suspects anonymous unless they are charged as adults, and it will be up to Marion County prosecutors to decide whether to pursue adult charges.
Detectives say the investigation into the Aug. 8 shooting is still active and are asking anyone with information to contact the IMPD tip line.
