A 56-year-old man is back in Chicago and charged with first-degree murder in the 2024 shooting death of a Hyde Park man, authorities said. The charge stems from an Aug. 22, 2024 confrontation outside Nichols Park that ended with a man fatally shot and later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Arrest and extradition
Police identified the suspect as Christopher Maxwell, 56, who was taken into custody in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, before being returned to Cook County to face the murder charge. According to CBS Chicago, Maxwell was arrested around noon Monday in the first block of Third Avenue Bridge in Cedar Rapids and has since been extradited to Chicago.
Local Iowa coverage reported that Maxwell had been held in Linn County on an outstanding Illinois warrant ahead of the transfer. The Gazette documented his earlier detention in Iowa and the pending extradition on the Illinois case.
The Hyde Park killing
The shooting unfolded around 4:20 p.m. on Aug. 22, 2024, when an argument outside Nichols Park allegedly escalated and a gunman opened fire, according to police. The victim, 29-year-old Joseph Cook, was shot in the neck and later pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Medical Center, as reported in Man Fatally Shot in Hyde Park. That earlier coverage noted that local outlets, including the Hyde Park Herald, confirmed Cook’s identity.
Court timeline
Maxwell is charged with first-degree murder and was scheduled for a detention hearing in Cook County Criminal Court on Tuesday, according to court and police records. Prosecutors will decide whether to seek an indictment after his initial appearance, CBS Chicago reported.
