The Indiana Senate recently greenlit a resolution to name a section of State Road 45 after the late basketball luminary Bobby Knight. Known for his towering presence in college basketball and particularly for his time leading the Indiana University Hoosiers, Knight's name will soon become a permanent fixture near Assembly Hall, the university's basketball arena. The resolution, steered by State Rep. Peggy Mayfield (R-Martinsville), has found unanimous backing in both legislative chambers.
With a coaching tenure that spanned nearly three decades at Indiana University, Knight's legacy is interwoven with the very fabric of Hoosier basketball culture. "Coach Knight's impact on Indiana goes far beyond the basketball court," Mayfield highlighted in a statement obtained by Indiana House Republicans. The decision to honor Knight has been lauded by many as a gesture befitting the coach's contribution not only to sports but to the community as whole.
Throughout his years as head coach from 1971 to 2000, Knight bagged three national championships, 11 Big Ten championships, and an NIT title. Nicknamed "The General," Knight is firmly placed among the giants of the game, ranking 14th in all-time coaching victories. He was named National Coach of the Year on four separate occasions before his induction into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1991.
Outside the hoop dreams, Knight, an Ohio native, also served his country in U.S. Army before taking on coaching duties. His storied career at Indiana University left an indelible mark on collegiate athletics; such was his influence that Mayfield noted "in 49 other states it's just basketball — but this is Indiana." The lawmaker also pointed to IU's recent triumph in the 2026 College Football Playoff National Championship.
